What is the truth?

A magnifying glass with TRUTH

The first time I noticed someone had a different interpretation from me of a book (Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town) we both read was when I was in my fourth year of university. At first, I couldn’t understand it. How can this person not see and understand what I saw in the book? How can they read the same sentence and interpret it so different from what I took from the sentence? And most importantly, what is the RIGHT interpretation?

But it’s not just what we read; it’s what we see, feel, taste and smell. A perfume scent smells different to everyone. We respond to touch differently. Some are more sensitive in other places than others. We see something, and we interpret it in so many ways.

Since our senses interpret things differently, is there really a central truth? Sure, there is an objective truth- but this also comes initially from someone in a position of power that interpreted things a certain way, which is now taken as truth. Science is usually taken as a source of truth, but science was initially made up of people’s assumptions and theories which were tested out. There could be other theories and hypotheses that could be tested and responded to the same way.

So what is truth?
